Micro-Positives

Nov 08, 2024
Alt Text: A blog post header image from "Inclusive Minds UK" (IMUK) titled "Micro-Positives." The background has a gradient from pink to purple to blue. The IMUK logo, with an abstract colorful brain illustration, appears on the upper left alongside the text "IMUK Inclusive Minds UK." On the upper right is a meme featuring Sam Thompson and Nigel Farage from the show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! Sam, wearing a headband, is smiling on the left, while Nigel, in a blue shirt, looks serious on the right. The caption above reads, "So, no, Nigel, ADHD never stops." The title "Micro-Positives" is displayed below the images.

Just read this, and let me be honest – it hit me right in the feels… I welled up… #TearsBeforeBreakfast

Although I'm not an avid watcher of the program, the storyline resonates deeply because, well, it's my story too.

I've been labelled as "too much," "exhausting," overly loud, too excitable, a chameleon, excessively chatty, verbose, and, yes, annoying.

Remarks like "I don't know how you survive daily because you forget stuff all the time!" have often been thrown my way.

Fun fact: My nickname during basic training was Dorey!

Sorry, I don't make the rules. — Your ...

These are known as #Microaggressions – each one a tiny pebble added to the invisible rucksack we all carry on our backs.

Over time, these pebbles accumulate until the bag becomes so heavy and cumbersome that moving forward feels like a struggle – definitely no floating involved! #WeighingYouDown

What might seem like a minor, flippant comment to you could be the pebble that sinks someone!

ADHD doesn't take a break, but these Microaggressions MUST.

My challenge to everyone today, is to put out ‘Micropositives’ into the world and help to remove the pebbles from someone’s invisible rucksack instead of add to it! #LightenTheLoad

Excerpt from the Ria Dictionary:

Micropositives (noun)

Definition:

Small yet impactful affirmations and compliments designed to brighten someone's day. These tiny gestures possess the power to uplift spirits and create a positive ripple effect in various contexts, including workplaces, educational settings, and interpersonal interactions.

Usage:

Micropositives aim to recognise and celebrate the strengths and unique qualities of individuals, fostering a culture of encouragement and kindness. By incorporating micropositives into daily exchanges, we contribute to redefining culture, atmosphere, workplace dynamics and enhancing interpersonal connections.

Example:

"Incorporating micropositives, such as acknowledging a colleague's creativity or complimenting their contributions, can significantly contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere in the workplace."

Make a conscious effort to share seemingly small comments that highlight someone's positives and strengths.

Whether it's acknowledging a great idea, complimenting their hat, appreciating their creative writing, or recognising the helpful tools they use to manage workflow – let's spread these #Micropositives far and wide.

This term might not be recognised yet, cos I think I made it up πŸ˜‚, but it should be! So let's change that!

Let's make "micropositives" a commonly used term in workplaces, educational institutions, academic papers, media and just EVERYWHERE!

Today put your #Micropositive out there and then post it on all your socials using the above hashtag and let’s flood everyone’s feed with positivity!

I cannot wait to read all about it!
